Muslims are a Force for Good

The Star newspaper edition of Monday 5 December 2011 carried coverage of four of the Muslim community initiatives and projects. These projects are just 4 of thousands more.

A lot of commendable initiatives taking place in our community bearing testimony to the strength of the spirit of philanthropy, dedication and commitment of Muslims in South Africa.
Within the confines of South Africa borders, we have shown resilience and a remarkable level of adaptation to be part and parcel of the relatively young nation yet with a history rich in diversity.

The level of adaptation, consistent with a degree of assertiveness has gone far enough in preserving an identity by creating an environment conducive for Deen. In that regard, masajid, madaris and certification of food and beverages are some of the vivid symbols of an active Muslim community.

However, the community has not limited itself to these projects. Often uncelebrated are the activities taking place without much aplomb and fanfare. Muslims have established schools, clinics, shelter for orphans among other public amenities.

This infrastructure is not Muslim only but enjoyed by all South Africans. Credit should be given to many of our pioneers and many other volunteers who spearhead such projects for the betterment of our society.

The four projects Star newspaper highlighted are the counselling services of the Muslim AIDS Programme; broadcasting services of Radio Islam; ambulance service by newly established Rescue 786 and water projects of the African Muslims Agency.

Such projects were in the past largely the mandate of governments only. Yet, largely without any subsidies, the Muslim community has taken up the challenge to complement the work of the various departments of the state.

The challenge of service delivery has bedevilled spheres of government especially at the local level. Muslims can play a tremendous role of catalyst for development by actively participating in government projects.

Even more appropriate, given the remarkable record of a level of professionalism and dedication, Muslims are best suited to initiate agencies that will become service providers in areas where service delivery remains wanting.

Such agencies, modelled on the lines of social entrepreneurship can play an important role in sectors such as delivery of low-cost houses as well as rural development.

In partnership with government and other role players, we can ensure that funds are used efficiently and wastage is minimised is other sectors such as primary health care and education.

We choose to call ourselves a minority on a continent which has a Muslim majority. This is a self-imposed marginalisation. We belong here and it is time to break the mould and be a truly force for good as Allah has intended of Muslims, wherever they may be.

Hadith of the Week

The Pure
.
Abu Hurairah Radhiallahu anhu reported: On the Night of Al-Isra (the Night of Ascension) the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam was presented with two drinking vessels: one full of wine and the other one full of milk. He looked at them. Then he took the vessel which was full of milk. Thereupon Jibril (Gabriel) said: "Al-hamdu lillah (praise be to Allah) Who has guided you to that, which is in accord with Fitrah (i.e., Islamic Monotheism; pure nature of Islam). Had you selected wine, your people would have gone astray.''

Q and A

Question:
Is it permitted to tint the windows of a Masjid?

Is it permissible to perform Salaah facing such glass/windows?

Answer:

Tinting the windows of a Masjid is not objectionable. Masjid windows are generally tinted so that it can serve as a barrier from the harsh rays of the son and in certain instances not to allow people from outside to have a direct view into the Masjid for security reasons.

It is permissible to perform Salaah facing windows that are tinted. If the tint on the windows, however, causes a mirror effect whereby the reflection of a person can be seen then if this interferes with the concentration of a person then it will be better for him to choose a spot in the Masjid where he will not be standing before the tinted glass.

Message from the Ameer of the Jamiatul Ulama

Amar bil Maroof wa al-Nahy anil Munkar

(This is one of the Ameer's previous messages)

Enjoining the good and forbidding the evil is an important aspect in Islam. It is considered to be a responsibility of the Believers. It is considered to be among the signs and qualities of the Believers. It is mentioned as a means of protecting oneself from the punishment of Allah. It is the basis, foundation and means of creating a moral society. Abstaining from it is a cause for incurring the displeasure of Allah and also a prevention for the acceptance of du`aa.

Allah mentions amar bil ma`ruf and nahy anil munkar in various verses of the Qur`aan, and numerous ahaadeeth have been narrated on the issue. Some of them are:

“The believers, men and women, are Awliyaa’ (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma‘roof (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden)”
[al-Tawbah 9:71]

“Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-Ma‘roof (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden)” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:104]

“You (true believers in Islamic Monotheism, and real followers of Prophet Muhammad and his Sunnah) are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Ma‘roof (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam has ordained) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden)”
[Aal ‘Imraan 3:110]

Abu Sa"id al-Khudri (RA), reported that the Messenger of Allah had said: "Whoever amongst you sees anything objectionable, let him change it with his hand, if he is not able, then with his tongue, and if he is not even able to do so, then with his heart, and the latter is the weakest form of faith." (Saheeh Muslim)

May Allah make it possible to practice upon these verses and ahaadeeth.
