Even at Seven Billion, there is Room for Many More…

The United Nations claimed that the 7 billionth baby was born somewhere around the world in Monday, 31 October 2011.

By other accounts, those who project the population argue that the world population will not hit the 7 billion mark until sometime in March 2012.
Regardless who is accurate, the earth is populated by more humans than at any other time in the history of the planet.

Population and its control has been a controversial socio-political subject. In China, the government imposed a one-child policy to check the growth of the population. In India, the country set to overtake China as the world’s most populous in a few years to come, measures such as sterilisation and gender-selection have been adopted either formally or culturally.

The consequence of such policies which are well-documented have been varied and mainly detrimental resulting in a range of distortions such as lop-sided gender ratio and high health risk remedies for birth control such as back-street abortions.

In several industrialised nations, population control has resulted in ageing population mix with a narrowing base of economically productive individuals.

Such measures were taken in the past under the belief that only such interventions could check the Malthusian population explosion which would outstrip agricultural food production resulting in famines and civil strife.
The reality however is that the planet has a capacity to hold much more humans. Most of the supply shortages the world has experienced in history are largely man-made.

What has created shortage is mainly avoidable wars fuelled by the greed of capitalism. Even in instances when climatic conditions have had adverse impact on food supply, the regions with surplus have not been able to help with shortages chiefly due to lack of political will which is indirectly reinforced by capitalistic notions.

Agricultural practices too have been oriented towards capitalistic markets. Vast swathes of arable land that would otherwise be set aside for food production have been committed to all sorts of produce including carcinogenic ones such as tobacco.

This ‘cash crop’ mentality has not only lead to strained food supplies but also socio-political upheavals which are only compounded as populations grow.

Amidst all this, the fragility of the planet has become more and more apparent. Climatic change is an empirical phenomenon whose brunt is being felt across the globe. As freshwater supplies, fuels and other non-renewable resources are diminishing, it up to humanity to adjust in lifestyles.

Even at the present levels of production, there is so much waste which can be eliminated and feed another billion people and more. For now however, in one part of the world, others die of undernourishment yet in another, others struggle with medical conditions associated with over-nourishment,  consumption beyond surfeit.

Hadith of the Week

Signs of the Time
Abu Waqid Al-Harith bin ‘Auf Radhiallahu anhu reported: “The Messenger of Allah Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam was sitting in the mosque with his Companions when three people came to him. Two of them stepped forward to the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam and the third went away. Those two men stood by the side of Messenger of Allah Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam. One of them found a space in the circle and he filled it, while the other one sat behind him. When the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam finished, he said, ‘Shall I not inform you about these three people? One of them sought refuge with Allah and Allah gave him refuge; the second one felt shy and Allah showed kindness to his shyness (and so he was accommodated in that meeting), and the last one averted, and so Allah turned away His Attention from him.’”

Q and A

Question:
Given that the price of Qurbani animals is so exorbitant, would it be encouraged to rather just do Qurbani abroad?

Answer:

It is more virtuous for a person, upon whom Qurbani is wajib, that he personally slaughter the Qurbani animal. If this is not achieved, he should at least witness the slaughtering of his animal. Furthermore, it is also virtuous for a person to eat from his own Qurbani animal. Rasoolullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam slaughtered his own Qurbani animal and also ate from it. By having one's Qurbani animal slaughtered in another country he will be deprived of these Sunnah practices and their virtue.

Nevertheless, despite the matter of virtue it is permissible for a person upon whom Qurbani is Wajib to send the animal for Qurbani to another place for it to be slaughtered. Similarly, it is permissible for him to instruct or appoint a person in another place to purchase an animal for Qurbani and slaughter it on his behalf.

We, therefore, suggest that in the particular context of the question (where the value of the Qurbani animal is very exorbitant locally) that the people conduct their Wajib Qurbani locally and some of their Nafl Qurbani abroad. In this way they would not be deprived of the full spirit and the aforementioned virtues of Qurbani.

Message from the Ameer of the Jamiatul Ulama

Trust in Allah

An important feature that should govern all of a believer’s thinking and actions is that of tawakkul – placing our trust in Allah alone.

In general Tawakkul refers to the appointment of someone as a wakeel, agent or representative on one’s behalf. It is often resorted when one is aware of the fact that he/she is not able capable of fulfilling the demands of a task on one’s own or when one realizes that the task could be more comprehensively and effectively completed by someone more well-versed or skilled than oneself.

In terms of shari‘ah it refers to referring the outcome of one’s tasks to Allah. It is delegating Allah as one’s representative and helper in the matter of one’s affairs. It is based in the realization of the greatness and power of Allah and consequent submission to Allah as the Decider of all affairs.

The Qur’an is replete with verses speaking about the importance, virtue and significance of tawakkul. On numerous occasions Allah mentions the attitude and approach of various Ambiyaa as being one abounding in tawakkul. The Messengers of Allah always turned to Allah and placed their trust in Him. This was also the practice of our beloved Prophet, Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta‘aala) speaks about the important position of tawakkul and identifies it as a necessary quality of the Believers. He says:

The believers are only those who: when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful; when His verses are recited to them, they increase their faith; and only on their Lord they rely (have Tawakkul). (8:2)

Regarding tawakkul Allah also says: "Upon Allah should the Believers have Tawakkul (trust)." “Whoever relies on Allah (has Tawakkul), He is sufficient for him” (65:3)

“Thus have We sent you to a community, before whom other communities have passed away, in order that you recite to them what We have revealed to you, but they disbelieve in the Most Gracious. Say: He is my Lord; there is no deity except Him; upon Him I rely (in Him I have Tawakkul) and to him is my return in repentance”. (13:30)

The Ahaadeeth of the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is also with statements regarding tawakkul. Among them are:

‘Umar Bin Khattaab, radhiallahu ‘anhu says that he heard the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam saying, “If you trust Allah with right kind of Tawakkul, He will provide you sustenance as He provides for the birds – they go out in the morning with empty stomachs and come back in the evening with full stomachs.” (Tirmidhi)

The Messenger of Allah, Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “The human mind keeps wandering and branching away into different valleys. If someone follows his mind in all those wanderings, Allah does not care which valley ruins that person. On the other hand, whoever has Tawakkul in Allah, He will be sufficient to save him from those wanderings.” (Ibn Majah from ‘Amr Ibn Al-’Aas)

Seventy thousand of my Ummah will enter Jannah without reckoning. They will be those who did not seek cure through mantras, who did not take omens and who had Tawakkul in their Lord. (Bukhari and Muslim from Ibn ‘Abbaas)

In these troubled times that we live in it is important for us to increase our tawakkul and trust in Allah.

May Allah Subhanahu wa ta’aala guide us in all that we do, and may He accept our ibaadah and efforts. May He accept all our du‘aas. Aameen.

Eid Mubarak!
