Haj Chaos: A Poor Reflection of Muslim Integrity!

The United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) is extremely troubled and concerned about the Haj visa chaos that has the potential of further fragmenting an already divided South African Muslim community. Some of the issues that gave rise to the current visa chaos were a direct result of:

* An Unaccredited Operator: An unaccredited tour operator called ‘As Sabireen” solicited 1000 visas directly from Saudi Arabia. SAHUC alerted the Ambassador and the relevant authorities in the Kingdom as soon as it became aware of the issuance of ‘irregular’ visas. 92 people had booked with Sabireen who are now left stranded. SAHUC was contacted by Friends of the Hujaaj in an attempt to secure 92 visas. SAHUC had obviously refused to legitimise the unlawful dealings of the tour operator.

* Visas From neighbouring countries: Accredited tour operators who fraudulently acquired visas from neighbouring Southern African countries by dishonestly producing residence permits for the pilgrims from the said countries.

* Visas for sale: 104 accredited people were left stranded without visas because between seven to eleven ‘Accredited Operators’ had secured visas from the embassy on the pretext that they were applying for South Africans residing in neighbouring countries. They had thus exhausted the allocated visa quota. SAHUC intervened and manage to secure visas for the 104 affected pilgrims.

We appeal to the Muslim community not to adopt dishonest measures in attempting to perform a fardh of Islam, nor give currency to unverified chit-chat as this only serves to negatively impact on the welfare of pilgrims.

Reward for Accepted Haj
Abu Hurairah Radhi-Allahu anhu reported: The Messenger of Allah Sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam said, "(The performance of) `Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous `Umrah; and the reward of Hajj Mabrur (i.e., one accepted) is nothing but Jannah.'' (Al-Bukhari & Muslim)

Q and A

Question:
Is the performance of Qurbani abroad valid and would it be encouraged?

Answer:

It is, in principle, permissible to carry out Qurbani abroad. However, one should ensure that some Qurbani share be slaughtered at home (in one’s own country). According to senior Ulama, if one suffices on performing Qurbani abroad without performing it him/her self, he/she would be deprived of the actual reward of carrying out the Ibadah.

Prohibition against Muslims disassociating themselves from one another

“The believers are brothers, so make peace between your brothers.” (49:10)
“Do not help each other to wrongdoing and enmity.” (5:2)
“Conferring in secret is from Shaytan.” (58:10)

• Anas radhiyallahu anhu reported that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, “Do not cut one another off nor have enmity and hatred towards one another. Be slaves of Allah, like brothers. It is not lawful for a Muslim to cut himself off from his brother for more than three days.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

• Abu Ayyub radhiyallahu anhu reported that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, “It is not lawful for a Muslim to cut himself off from his brother for more than three nights so that when they meet this one turns aside and that one turns aside. The best of them is the one who greets the other first.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

• Abu Hurayrah radhiyallahu anhu reported that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, “Actions are presented every Monday and Thursday, and Allah then forgives every man who does not associate anything with Him except for a man who has rancour for his brother. He says, “Wait until these two make it up!” (Muslim)

• Jabir radhiyallahu anhu said: I heard Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam say, “Shaytan has despaired of being worshipped in the Arabian Peninsula by those who do the prayer, but he does sow discord between them.” (Muslim)

• Abu Hurayrah radhiyallahu anhu reported that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, “It is not lawful for a Muslim to separate from his brother for more than three days. Anyone who separates himself for more than three days and then dies will enter the Fire.” (Abu Dawud)

• Abu Khirash Hadrad ibn Abi Hadrad al-Aslami radhiyallahu anhu, also called as-Sulami, the Companion, heard Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam say, “Anyone who separates himself from his brother for a year, it is as if he had shed his blood.” (Abu Dawud)

• Abu Hurayrah radhiyallahu anhu reported that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, “It is not lawful for a believer to separate from a believer for more than three days. If it goes beyond three and he meets him, he should greet him. If he returns the greeting, they share in the reward. If he does not return it, he returns with the sin. A Muslim is someone who rejects separation.” (Abu Dawud) Abu Dawud said, “When the separation is for the sake of Allah, none of this applies.”

• Ibn Mas’ud radhiyallahu anhu reported that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, “When you are three together, two should not speak together privately apart from the other one until you come together with other people because that might upset him.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Message from the Ameer of the Jamiatul Ulama

The Almighty Forbade Oppression even for Himself

As humans, we tend to justify our actions even if they violate the rights of others. It is not uncommon to verbally abuse another person on the pretext that “he is my enemy.”

One of the descriptions of oppression is “to do or say something that is inappropriate.” What this translates into is that anything that is done or said that would result in hurt or humiliation would be regarded as oppressive.

Allah the Almighty dislikes oppression. We read in a Hadith Qudsi that Allah has forbidden oppression upon Himself and has commanded His creation not to oppress one another.

In the world that we are living in it seems that feelings for others are regarded as unimportant. There is also an increasing mindset that as long as a person is deemed as inferior, one has the right to do as one pleases as far as violation of rights are concerned.

We need to be aware that the du’aa of an oppressed person is answered. So as much as we think that the victim of our oppression is powerless the reality is that he/she has recourse to the Highest authority. This awareness can become a means of us becoming more conscious of how we treat and speak with people.

It is an unfortunate reality that the people closest to us can also become victims of our oppression. We become oblivious to the hurt that we cause them. It is always wise to weigh our words and actions lest they become destructive and demeaning.

It would be a great tragedy if our oppression of others becomes for us an oppressive darkness in the Hereafter. May Allah guide us. (Ameen)
