Ending the Occupation is the
Bottom Line
|
Gilad Shalit, walked free
yesterday as the prisoner swap
deal between Hamas and Israel
came into effect.
In
exchange, about 450 Palestinians
were also released from Israeli
jails where they were held for
various alleged offences. In
all, just over a thousand
Palestinian prisoners will be
released under the deal.
Shalit, was captured by the
Qassam Brigades, the armed wing
of Hamas over five years ago. If
you read from right wing press,
that capture was a ‘kidnap’ if
not an ‘abduction.’ Shalit was a
‘hostage.’
In many
respects, however, Shalit was a
prisoner of war. He was captured
in uniform and Hamas used him to
secure release of many
Palestinian detainees held in
Israeli jails for offences
linked to the fight to end the
occupation.
The focus of
the prisoner swap deal between
Israel and Hamas has in many
ways been centred on the
‘maximum price’ Israel has paid
in order to release Shalit.
However, Palestinians in general
and in Gaza in particular have
paid a high price in the
generations of fight for
freedom.
At least one
account suggests that that Ehud
Olmert, the former Israeli prime
minister had considered Shalit’s
capture as an opportunity in
which he would ‘finish off’
Hamas once and for all.
A
catalogue of attacks such as the
raid on Khan Yunis refugee camp,
Operation Cast Lead and many
other operations in which
hundreds of Palestinians have
died, as well as the continuing
siege of Gaza, are testimony to
the dehumanising attitude of
Israel towards Palestinians.
The application of symmetry
to the oppressor and oppressed
will be recorded as the single
most important letdown of the
Palestinian people by the
supposed ‘civilised world.’ Even
worse are situations where
certain sections of the media
portray Israel as the victim.
Such media will gloss over
the fact that Shalit has been
returned in good health. They
will also not put everything in
a context where even during
Operation Cast Lead, a bombing
campaign of besieged Gaza,
Shalit remained protected as the
Palestinian dead exceeded those
who have just been released
under yesterday’s swap deal.
As Shalit walked and was
airlifted to freedom, the
released Palestinian detainees
were in essence being bussed
from Israel’s formal custody to
another form of prison life that
is besieged Gaza.
Others
still, beyond the celebrated
reunions with their families,
face uncertain future as they
become deportees to Jordan,
Syria, Qatar and Turkey farther
and farther away from their
occupied land.
The
obligations remain on Israel to
end the occupation and accede to
internationally held positions,
resolutions and treaties calling
for the liberation of Palestine.
A prison exchange is welcome
but a far cry from the ultimate:
ending the illegal occupation of
Palestine. |

Virtue of
Congregation |
.
Abu Hurairah Radhiallahu
anhu reported: The Messenger
of Allah Sallallahu ‘alayhi
wasallam said, "A man's
Salat in congregation is
twenty-five times more
rewarding than his Salat at
home or in his shop, and
that is because when he
performs his Wudu' properly
and proceeds towards the
mosque with the purpose of
performing Salat in
congregation. He does not
take a step without being
raised a degree (in rank)
for it and having a sin
remitted for it, till he
enters the mosque. When he
is performing Salat, the
angels continue to invoke
Blessings of Allah on him as
long as he is in his place
of worship in a state of
Wudu'. They say: `O Allah!
Have mercy on him! O Allah!
Forgive him.' He is deemed
to be engaged in Salat as
long as he waits for it.''

Q and A |
Question: Is a
person allowed to keep all
the Qurbani meat for himself
and not distribute to others
at all?
Can a person
distribute someone else’s
Qurbani to non-muslims?
|
Answer:
Although a person is
encouraged to give one third
to family, one third to the
poor and needy and keep one
third for himself, if he
keeps all for himself, there
will be no harm in this.
Similarly, if he gives all
the meat away, that too
would be permtited.
In terms of distributing
someone else’s Qurbani, one
would be obliged to
distribute it among Muslims
only unless the donor
expressly allows his meat to
be given to non Muslims.
This is because donors in
our societies generally
expect their meat to be
given to the Muslims and not
to non Muslims.

Message from the Ameer of
the Jamiatul Ulama |
|
To benefit you must
be … |
Allah Subhanahu wa
Ta`aala has made various
promises to the Believers.
He has promised them gardens
in Paradise and protection
from the fire of Hell. He
has assured them of a high
position in his eyes in both
this world and the
hereafter. He has told them
that he will make them His
representatives on this
earth, make their religion
strong and powerful and
grant them security on this
earth. He has guaranteed
them various other virtues
and benefits.
Muslims
often ask why it is that we
see Muslims in the world
today in a position where it
seems that these promises
have not been fulfilled and
they regularly question why
they undergo such severe and
testing times and
difficulties.
The
answer, many scholars have
insisted, is simple. For a
person to benefit of the
perks of a managing
director, he must perform
the tasks of a MD and bear
the burden of fulfilling the
responsibilities of an MD.
This is true for all spheres
of life and existence.
Similarly, for a
Believer to expect the
benefits promised to the
Believers, he must acquire
the qualities of a Believer
and live the life of a
Believer as described in the
Qur’an and Sunnah.
May Allah Subhanahu wa
Ta`aala make it possible for
us to understand this simple
concept and to bring it into
our lives. Aameen.
