The 9/11 Decade
|
The Muslim world will remember
the 10 years after 11 September
2001 as a period when
Islamophobia came of age with
politicians trying to outdo each
other in anti-Islamic rhetoric.
The victims of 9/11 were no
more than 3000. However, in
Muslim lands, people at
weddings, funerals and many more
going about their daily lives
have indiscriminately met death,
injury and mayhem, by the
hundreds of thousands, from
unmanned aerial vehicles
stalking them above their heads.
Sadistic military officers
whose abuse have been exposed
from time to time, have been
seen posing with their victims
as trophy from they collected
souvenirs in human flesh.
A conservative estimate put
the war dead in Afghanistan and
Iraq, a country which had
nothing to do with attacks on
America at well over 1.45
million.
As the
anti-terror legislation
tightened around the world,
citizens saw the erosion of
civil liberties. In the name of
‘homeland security’, full-body
scanners were deployed at ports
forcing others even opting not
to travel rather than be
subjected to what they
considered humiliation.
The 9/11 decade will also be
remembered as the period when
the free world abandoned its
claimed position of respect for
human rights as renditions were
routinely and systematically
carried out, abducting Muslims
suspected as terrorists from
across the seas to hidden
locations where torture became
part of the interrogation of
detainees.
The CIA
documents found by rebels in
government offices in Libya
indicate to us the extent to
which the supposed adversarial
relations between the US and the
UK on one hand, and the Gaddafi
regime on the other, were
actually a mask of blossoming
friendly ties in which the
supposed champions of decency
would abduct rebels and hand
them over into the hands of
murderous regimes.
Islamophobia has not ended but
has morphed into more subtle
forms with a ready excuse
available for regimes
suppressing a Muslim identity.
In the pursuit of the wars
America found itself fighting,
it also bled financially.
The configuration of world
power is changing and those
changes might have also played a
part in the dramatic political
revolutions taking place
particularly in the Middle East.
It is up to the people of
goodwill to seize these moments
of our time to shape a future
for more equitable and just
order of multicultural polities. |

Dearest Acts |

Narrated Abdullah
Radhiallahu anhu: “I asked
the Prophet Sallallahu
‘alayhi wasallam “Which deed
is the dearest to Allah?” He
replied, “To offer the
prayers at their early
stated fixed times.” I
asked, “What is the next (in
goodness)?” He replied, “To
be good and dutiful to your
parents.” I again asked,
“What is the next (in
goodness)?” He replied, “To
participate in Jihad
(religious fighting) in
Allah's cause.” Abdullah
added, “I asked only that
much and if I had asked
more, the Prophet would have
told me more.”

Q and A |
Question: Does
the Wudhu of a person break
if he is sitting on a chair
and he happens to fall
asleep?
Does the
Salaah of a person break if
he falls asleep whilst
making Salaah on a chair?
|
Answer:
If the person falls off
to sleep whilst sitting on
the chair and he was leaning
on the back-rest of the
chair in such a manner that
if the back-rest was removed
he would fall down then that
type of sleep is considered
as a nullifying factor for
his Wudhu. Therefore, if he
fell asleep in the above
manner then his Salaah will
be nullified. [Hindiyyah

Message from the Ameer of
the Jamiatul Ulama |
|
Let the eyes remain
moist! |
Like a flash the blessed
month has come and gone. As
some bask in the sense of
accomplishment of Ramadan
and others surely lament
missed opportunities, we
need to be positive and take
delight in the fact that
Islam is neither a seasonal
religion nor is our Ibaadat
seasonal. There still remain
multiple opportunities to
show our subservience and
obedience to Allah.
In a hadith narrated by
Sayyidah Aisha Siddeeqa
Radhi-Allahu anha we learn
that the best actions in the
sight of Allah are those
that are constant even
though they may be less. So
consistency is the key.
Perhaps the easiest way to
remain consistent is to
remain punctual with our
five daily salaah. This
daily invitation to the
house of Allah and our
response to it will ensure
that the spark of
spirituality that was
ignited during Ramadan will
continue to burn strongly.
An added benefit of
frequenting the Masjid is
that we can maintain the
momentum of tilaawat and be
in contact with the
congregation. It should be
easier to sustain such a
routine which many were able
to establish during Ramadan.
Hadith literature
abounds with narrations
about crying and shedding
tears out of fear and awe of
Allah Ta’aala. With our
hearts soft and beings
inclined towards the
obedience of Allah we should
take full advantage of the
narrations where we learn
that the eyes that shed
tears out of fear of Allah
will not see the fire of
Jahannam.
There is a
wonderful narration that
speaks about shedding tears
in the middle of night out
of awe and fear of Allah.
These gems of wisdom are our
legacy. We need to take full
advantage of them. May
our eyes remain moist out of
gratitude and awe of Allah.
