Condemnation of Syrian
Government’s Actions against
its own People
|
|
A Press Statement (For
Immediate Release) |
The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa
would like to express its
condemnation of the Syrian
government’s use of force
against its own civilians which
has resulted in a toll of over
1500 fatalities since March this
year.
During fresh
attacks on Sunday which have
since been widely reported,
security forces tank-shelled and
used lethal gunfire to kill at
least 80 people in the city of
Hama alone.
The southern
city of Dara’a which has
hitherto been the epicentre of
the government-opposition
conflict was also not spared
from the government forces
attacks on civilians.
The
escalation of violence against
civilians is further testimony
of the intransigence of the
regime of Bashar Al Assad that
does not want to address popular
grievances yet would like to
maintain absolute control
regardless of the wishes of the
Syrian people.
The
ongoing atrocious military
actions unleashed against
civilians on the eve of Ramadan
underline the regimes
insensitivity and sadistic
outlook to the events unfolding
inside Syria and the greater
Middle East.
The
legitimacy of Bashar Al Assad’s
government is called into
question and we urge all people
of goodwill to help the Syrian
people by denouncing and
isolating this regime and its
agents.

Q and A |
Question: Is it
true that there is no
specific Du’aa to read when
beginning a fast?
|
Answer:
It is true that there is
no specific Du'aa mentioned
for commencing one's fast.
However, a basic Arabic
rendition of an intention
for fasting (or translation
thereof) is generally
published for those who find
it difficult to resolve a
Niyyah for fasting. The
actual requirement is Niyyah
i.e. formulating an
intention in one's heart.
The same rule applies to
Salaah, Haj, Zakaah, Saum,
etc.
It should be
borne in mind that the books
of Fiqh also contain "Du'as"
or verbal renditions of
Niyyah. This is merely to
assist a person how to go
about making a Niyyah and
what to consider in his
intention.

Summarised Jumu’ah
Bayaan: |

Rasullah
salallahu alayhi wasalam
and Ramadan (I of IV) |
|
Rasulullah
salallahu alayhi wasalam
& his Creator |
“And whatsoever the
Messenger gives you,
take it; and whatsoever
he forbids you, abstain
(from it), and fear
Allah.” (59:7)
“He who obeys the
Messenger, has indeed
obeyed Allah; but he who
turns away, then we have
not sent you (O Muhammad
salallahu alayhi
wasalam) as a guardian
over them.”(4:80)
• Rasulullah
salallahu alayhi wasalam
was the messenger of
guidance through and
through, he possessed
the highest degree of
the recognition of Allah
Ta’ala while
simultaneously it was he
who fulfilled the rights
of the worship of Allah
Ta’ala to the greatest
degree of excellence.
• Despite
exerting himself in
prostration to an extent
whereby his blessed feet
would swell up, he
remarked when questioned
regarding it by his wife
‘Aisha radhiyallahi
anha, ‘Should I then not
be a grateful servant of
Allah Ta’ala.’ (Bukhari)
• This feat of his
reached its pinnacle and
manifested itself during
the month of Ramadan
more distinctly than any
other time of the year.
This manifested itself
in various ways, among
others:
1. His salallahu alayhi
wasalam fasting:
Rasulullah salallahu
alayhi wasalam
encouraged the partaking
of food at the time of
Suhur. Abdullah bin
Haarith radhiyallahi
anhu says that that a
Sahabi (companion) came
into the company of
Rasulullah salallahu
alayhi wasalam while he
was partaking of the
food of Sehri. Rasullah
salallahu alayhi wasalam
remarked, ‘This food is
a blessing that Allah
Ta’ala has bestowed upon
you. Therefore, do not
leave it.’ (Nisaa-i)
Similarly he would
hasten to terminate his
fasting as soon as the
time set in. Anas
radhiyallahi anhu says
that Rasulullah
salallahu alayhi wasalam
would break his fast
prior to performing
Maghrib with some fresh
dates; if they were not
available then some dry
dates; and if that too
was not found then a few
sips of water.’
(Tirmidhi)
2. His salallahu
alayhi wasalam
recitation of Qur’an:
Ibn Abbas
radhiyallahi anhu says
that Jibraeel alayhis
salam would visit
Rasulullah salallahu
alayhi wasalam each
night in Ramadan and
Rasulullah salallahu
alayhi wasalam would
recite the Qur’an to
him. He salallahu alayhi
wasalam once confided to
his daughter Fatima
radhiyallahi anha
saying, ‘Jibraeel
alayhis salam would
visit me each year once
during Ramadan to revise
the Qur’an. However,
this year he revised it
with me twice. I do not
take this except as a
sign that my time of
death has neared.’
(Bukhari) Ibn Mas’ud
radhiyallahi anhu says,
‘It is appropriate for a
Hafidh (one who has
memorized) of the Qur’an
to be known by his
recitation during the
night whilst everyone is
asleep, during the day
whilst everyone is
feasting, in his moments
of sadness whilst
everyone is happy and
with his tears whilst
everyone is in pomp and
merriment.’ (Baihaqi)
3. His
salallahu alayhi wasalam
humbleness and
abstinence:
It is surely a symbol of
one whose heart has
softened in awe of his
Creator, has realized
the reality of servitude
to Allah Ta’ala and has
acknowledged his own
limitations to be most
humble before Allah
Ta’ala. Rasulullah
salallahu alayhi wasalam
was a personification of
this. Abu Saeed Khudri
radhiyallahi anhu
narrates that once it
rained on the evening of
the twenty first of
Ramadan and the masjid
of Rasulullah salallahu
alayhi wasalam leaked.
My eyes fell upon the
messenger of Allah
salallahu alayhi wasalam
the next morning and his
blessed face was soiled
with mud and water.’
(Bukhari)
4. His salallahu
alayhi wasalam
generosity
Ibn Abbas radhiyallahi
anhu remarked,
‘Rasulullah salallahu
alayhi wasalam was the
most generous of all
people and he was most
generous in the month of
Ramadan when Jibraeel
alayhis salam would meet
him…’ (Bukhari)
5. His salallahu
alayhi wasalam fighting
in the way of Allah:
This is surely a month
of sacrifice and
difficulty. The Jihad of
Rasulullah salallahu
alayhi wasalam during
this month reveals two
distinctions: the
occurrence of decisive
battles during this
month and secondly, the
greatest manifestation
of the help of Allah
Ta’ala. ‘Umar bin
Khattab radhiyallahi
anhu says, ‘We took part
in two expeditions with
Rasulullah salallahu
alayhi wasalam during
Ramadan: the battle of
Badr and the conquest of
Makkah.’ (Tirmidhi)

Ramadan: Maximising
Virtue |
By the time! Lo! Man is
in a state of loss; Save
those who have faith and do
righteous deeds, And
counsel each other to hold
on to truth and Counsel
each other to be steadfast.
(Surah Asr)
How time goes!
Just like the other day, we
bade farewell to Ramadan. In
almost like a wink, we are
inside another Ramadan and
before we realize it, the
month will be departing
again.
The value of
time in according to what we
put in it. As the Almighty
reminds us in the Qur’an in
the above-quoted verses, the
difference between a winner
and a loser in the eyes of
the Almighty depends on what
deeds with have advanced in
the time we are on earth.
So much is happening in
the Muslim lands around the
world. There is famine in
Somalia; there is civil
strife in Libya and Syria.
There is apprehension about
our own future as a nation.
These are fundamental
matters we need to ponder
over and seek Allah’s
Guidance for.
The
month of Ramadan is a month
of forgiveness. Let us turn
to our Creator in
repentance, seeking His Help
and replacing our bad habits
with good ones.
The
month of Ramadan is known as
the month of compassion.
Let’s join the initiatives
for reaching out to the
starving people of Somalia
as well as the needy in our
communities.
The
month of Ramadan is
meritorious with deeds
rewarded more than in any
other months. Let’s manage
our time well in order to
maximize on those rewards
while the Blessed Month
lasts.
Ramadan
Mubarak!
