The Legacy of Abu Bakr
Radhi-Allahu anhu
The close companionship of the
Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi
wasallam to Abu Bakr
Radhi-Allahu anhu is a
well-known one.
The
Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi
wasallam once said: “No body has
done a favour for us except that
we have compensated him save Abu
Bakr for, he has done us favours
that, it is only Allah who can
recompense him for it on the Day
of Judgement.” (At-Tirmidhi)
Yet when gleaning through
the various collections of
traditions of the Prophet
Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam,
seldom does one come across the
name of this first khalifa of
Islam as a hadith narrator.
What was the role of Abu
Bakr then which even the Prophet
Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam
himself admitted could not
recompense? What earned Abu Bakr
consideration by the Prophet
Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam that
“if he were to take one friend,
it would be Abu Bakr?”
One would cite Abu Bakr’s
Radhi-Allahu anhu unconditional
acceptance of Muhammad
Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam as
Alllah’s messenger. It is him
who defended the Prophet’s
Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam
integrity and honour when he was
ridiculed and scorned on the
announcement of his nightly
journey of Isra and Miraj.
It also appears that one of
the most striking attributes of
Abu Bakr was his generosity.
It is Abu Bakr who ransomed
Bilal ibn Rabbah Radhi-Allahu
anhu. He saved Bilal from being
crushed under a boulder on the
hot desert sand at the hands of
the pagan Makkans. He challenged
the pagans that even if they had
wanted 20 times more than what
he paid in gold for ransom, he
could have still paid them for
Bilal’s eventual freedom.
It is Abu Bakr who paid for
the land that was identified for
the construction of Masjidun
Nabawi. (So, when you visit the
Haram in Madinatun-Nabi,
remember the legacy of Abu Bakr
Siddiqui!)
When the
Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi
wasallam appealed for resources
before the expedition of Tabuk,
Abu Bakr presented to him
(Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam)
with four thousand silver
dirhams. Allah’s Messenger
Sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam
asked, "What did you leave to
your family?" He replied, "Allah
and His Messenger!"
Later when he came to know about
it, Umar Radhi-Allahu anhu
couldn’t help but concede that
he would never match Abu Bakr’s
spirit of sacrifice!
Abu
Bakr Radhi-Allahu anhu was also
a consummate mediator, resolving
disputes, establishing stability
and harmony among the early
Muslim community members.
The Jamiatul Ulama is
involved in relief, welfare,
Islamic education, mediation and
arbitration and various other
programmes that promote and
preserve the stability of our
community.
We appeal to
you our reader to emulate the
generosity of Abu Bakr
Radhi-Allahu in supporting our
work of the legacy of the
Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi
wasallam, his beloved companion
Abu Bakr Radhi-Allahu and all
those that follow them.
Start this Ramadan to make
regular, albeit small
contributions through debit
orders and other means to the
Jamiatul Ulama....” to spend of
your substance, out of love for
Him, for your kin, for orphans,
for the needy, for the wayfarer,
for those who ask, and for the
ransom of slaves; to be
steadfast in prayer, and
practice regular charity.”

Q and A |
Question: Is a
woman who is experiencing
menses during Ramadan
allowed to eat anything or
should she be observing a
‘fast’ like every one else?
Also, I heard that on
the day the menses comes to
an end, a different ruling
applies. Kindly clarify.
|
Answer:
A woman is allowed to
eat during the days of
Ramadan in which she
experiences her menses.
(Ahsanul Fataawa, vol.4
p.438). It is however waajib
for a woman that becomes
pure from her menses during
the day to abstain from
eating for the remainder of
the day (ibid).

Message from the Ameer of
the Jamiatul Ulama |
|
You Are Free |
Today, the buzzword of
empowerment is applied
everywhere. However, a
number of projects to make a
woman ‘equal’ to man that
are launched from time to
time ignore the disastrous
pitfalls that emanate
therefrom.
Empowerment that is devoid
of spiritual intervention
has much harm. The breakdown
of morality, high divorce
rates, juvenile delinquency,
single parent phenomena and
the overall breakdown of
family life are but some of
the so-called ‘gains’ of
these policies.
In
our times many
pseudo-intellects and others
are also joining the
bandwagon. “Throw out the
Hijaab” they say, though
there is no evidence that
suggest that the hijaab
clouds a person’s mind or
compromises a person’s
intelligence. Is there a
suitable Islamic module of
women’s empowerment and
emancipation?
The
answer is simple; when we
live our lives in accordance
to the Qur’an and Sunnah we
will experience true
liberation and equality.
Islam entrenches the rights
of both men and women
keeping in mind their unique
nature and temperament. A
cursory examination of these
rights will reveal that she
is indeed the queen of her
home, worthy of all the
dignity and respect that she
deserves.
We do not
believe that immorality is
reflective of one’s freedom
or that until and unless she
abandons her hayaa and
hijaab she will remain a
pitiful oppressed creature.
We do, however believe that
her status as a nurturer,
giver of life and as a
mother makes her unique.
As a tribute to our
women, let us celebrate the
hadith that says: “Paradise
lies under the feet of the
mother.” This implies that
women are also a medium for
eternal success in the
Hereafter. Can there be any
higher accolade than this?
May Allah keep all our
women safe and grant them
success. Ameen.
