Old Habits Die Hard

While Barack Obama has chosen to end the occupation of Iraq, he has opted to increase the number of troops in Afghanistan. The surge of troops in Iraq which he had voted against while senator, looks like a brilliant idea for Afghanistan.

Those who know Afghanistan however, consider it to be a graveyard of invaders. Before the dawn of this era, it was Alexander the Great who was forced to retreat from this land.

When George W Bush invaded Afghanistan, he considered himself a victor when the Taliban quickly disappeared. It was just a matter of time that the occupation would be an ill-fated one. The Taliban disappeared only to fight another day. Today, by a war of attrition, the allied forces have not won much else beyond the town limits of Kabul and Kandahar. They keep sustaining casualties by an invisible enemy.

It is not surprising that this is the case in Afghanistan. It was the invasion of Afghanistan that bankrupted the former Soviet Union and later led to its decline. Mikhail Gorbachev admitted defeat and withdrew from Afghanistan only to preside over the crumbling of the once mighty Soviet Union.

When Obama signalled a new age of engagement with the Muslim world, one thought he would be concentrating on ‘surges’ of diplomacy. Is he not the one who confronted General Petraeus in Congress with the fact that Iraq never had Al Qaeda and our (US) presence there has boosted that network? What difference does Afghanistan have? Is it something we have not been told about?

Obama could do better nursing the bleeding US economy rather than stoking more troubles that would only end in quagmire. His aura of invincibility is a thin veneer which can easily scrape off.

Signs of a Hypocrite

From Abu Hurairah Radhi-Allahu 'anhu who said that Allah's Messenger Salallahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: Three things are the sign of the hypocrite: when he speaks he tells lies, when he promises he breaks it and when he is trusted he proves to be dishonest. (Sahihain)

Q and A

Question: Kindly advise on what is a person required to do with lost items that he has found in a public place like a Masjid, school or Madrasah?

Answer: A notice should be put up regarding the lost and found item/s and that the owner should claim it from so and so person (e.g. The Imaam or principal). The notice should ideally be advertised for one year in the area that the item(s) is(were) lost/found. If no-one comes up to lay claim to the item then it should be given away in charity with the intention that its Thawaab should go to its owner, if he is a Muslim. The item should not be put to use in any way since the permission of the owner has not been granted.

Summarised Jumu’ah Bayaan:

Nabi salallahu alayhi wasalam: Life after Prophethood (I of IV)
O Prophet (Muhammad)! Verily, We have sent you as a witness, and a bearer of glad tidings, and a warner. And as one who invites to Allah by His permission, and as a lamp spreading light.
And announce to the believers the glad tidings that they will have from Allah a Great Bounty. (33: 45-47)

• When the following verse was revealed to Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam: “O you (Muhammad) wrapped in garments! Arise and warn! And magnify your Lord (Allah)! And purify your garments! And keep away from Ar-Rujz (the idols)!” (74: 1-5) He stood up in conformity with Allah’s command, with full reliance in Him and putting complete trust in Him. He called people to worship Allah, making the call secretly at first. Some men from the Quraish believed in his call. First from the men to believe was Abu Bakr radhiyallahu anhu. Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam used to meet the early Muslim secretly for three years, to guide them to what Allah guided him to of the religion of Islam, in the house of Al-Arqam bin Abi Al-Arqam radhiyallahu anhu.

• It was then revealed to him: “Therefore expound openly what thou art commanded, and turn away from those who join false gods with Allah.” (15: 97) From this time he climbed the hill of Safaa and called out: ‘O Banu Fihr, O Banu ‘Adi, O clans of Quraish!’ The people gathered around him and when they all assembled, he said to them: ‘I am the Messenger of Allah sent to you in particular and to all mankind in general.’ His uncle Abu Lahab angrily said: ‘Woe unto you! You gathered us to tell us that!’ He mocked at Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam and at what he said. Allah revealed the Surah Lahab in rebuke of this action of Abu Lahab. In vain the gathering dispersed. However, he continued his call to Allah in public and was met by the mockery of the people of Quraish who would say: ‘Look at the lad of ‘Abdul-Muttalib who is heavenly inspired! Look at the son of Abu Kabshah!’

• Nevertheless, he went on disclosing the erring mentality of the polytheists and clarifying the falsehood of their worship of idols. The Quraish demanded of Abu Taalib more than once to stop his nephew. Thus, Abu Taalib suggested to Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam to stop his call in order to save their lives. On hearing this, Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam, thinking that his uncle would fail him, was considerably depressed and said to him: ‘Look Uncle! By Allah, if they were to put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left hand, I will never give up my call, until Allah gives it prominence or that I will be killed for its sake.’ Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam then wept and went away. His uncle called him and said: ‘O nephew, say what you like. By Allah I will never surrender you to them.’

• Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam continued his call, while the polytheists increased their harm to him in words and in deeds. Whenever Abu Jahl saw him praying, he would forbid him and would speak harshly. One day, when Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam was performing prayer amid a group of the Quraish. Someone said: ‘Who could go to the slain camel of so and so and bring its blood and fetus and throw it between his shoulders when he prostrates himself?’ The wicked among the people went out and came back with the fetus. When Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam prostrated, he put it on the back of Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam. He remained in prostration while the people laughed and mocked at him. His daughter, Fatimah, who was a young girl at that time, then came and removed the fetus away.

• The Quraish intensified their torture to the followers of Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam, either through stabbing, beating or cauterizing with fire. He would encourage his Companions and urge them to be patient. One day, he passed by the family of Yasir while they were being tortured and said: ‘A Little more patience, O family of Yasir, for your meeting place will be Paradise.’ When the torture reached its climax, Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam permitted his Companions to immigrate to Abyssinia and said: ‘Spread throughout the earth, for Allah will reassemble you.’

• As for Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam, he remained in Makkah, suffering the torture of the Quraish with patience and trust in Allah. Both his uncle Abu Taalib and his wife Khadijah passed away in tenth year of the mission, which increased his grief. He travelled to Ta’if to call the tribe of Thaqif to Islam, but what he got was mockery and anguish. They even threw stones at him until he bled to his feet. Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam presented the true message of Islam every year to the Arab tribes in the season of Hajj. While he was in Al-‘Aqabah, he met a group of people from Al-Khazraj, a tribe of Madinah. He called them to Islam and recited to them some verses from the Qur’an. When they returned to their people in Yathrib (Madinah), they told them about him and called them to embrace Islam. In the following year, twelve men from the Khazraj came to Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam and pledged allegiance to him. He sent Mus’ab bin ‘Umair radhiyallahu anhu with them to teach them to recite the Qur’an and to instruct them in the teachings of Islam.

• Islam spread in Madinah more and more. In the following year, around seventy two people came to him and pledged allegiance, promising to defend him from any form of harm if he immigrated to them. This was a good new start for Islam and Muslims and a cause of pride for the people of Madinah. In the thirteenth year of the Mission, he moved on to Madinah together with his bosom friend Abu Bakr radhiyallahu anhu. This was the start of a new era in the history of Islam and it was a gateway for the Islam to spread to all corners of the Arab Peninsula.

• What Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasalam endured of harm, troubles and hardships for the sake of the Islam, is beaming example for people of sound intellect. It is for us to fear Allah and benefit from these lessons of patience and steadfastness. We have a responsibility to follow in his footsteps by spreading the message of Allah to all Mankind.

The Youth are our future and their future lay in the mindset that they develop, the attitudes that they employ and the approaches they enlist in dealing with various issues.

They will face challenges that may sometimes seem insurmountable, they will confront new subjects and concerns, they will deal with unique problems, and they will also be presented with astounding possibilities and opportunities.
