Press Statement
Criminal Threats of Violence against Migrants

A PRESS STATEMENT
(for immediate release)

The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa has noted with dismay a news report that the migrant communities of Mayfair and surrounding areas have received threats of „war.‟

The Mail & Guardian newspaper, through its online edition, carries a story (dated 3 Sep 2012) by Faranaaz Parker, about a group calling itself South African Blacks Association (SABA), which has been issuing letters of threats of violence against foreign nationals.

According to the news report, confirmed by community leaders in the area, SABA has „distributed pamphlets in the area – slipped into letter boxes and posted on lampposts – “declaring war” against refugees and warning foreigners that “we are coming for you”.‟

It is our view that such threats represent misplaced hostility from a section of society towards vulnerable communities seeking refuge in our country.

We call upon the authorities in the country not to take this issue lightly but investigate it thoroughly, in order to bring to book those that are driven by hate and expressly, intend to commit criminal acts.

We appeal to all communities to show their solidarity with law-abiding foreign nationals, who to a great extent earn their own livelihoods through entrepreneurship and sheer hard work.

Behaviour indicative of criminal activity and tendencies towards violence should immediately be reported to relevant authorities. If you are in the area and have anything to report about on this matter, please contact any one of the following:
